Is TMJ Tension Holding Your Jaw Hostage?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction affects far more than just your jawβ€”it can trigger chronic neck pain, headaches, and facial tightness.

😬 Bruxism & Clenching

Unconscious night grinding or daytime stress clenching leaves your masseter and temporal muscles exhausted and sore by morning.

πŸ”Š Jaw Clicking & Popping

Audible or painful popping when opening your mouth, chewing hard foods, or yawning indicates altered disc tracking in the joint.

πŸ’†β€β™‚οΈ Temple & Ear Pressure Headaches

Deep aching behind the eyes, across the forehead, or around the ears caused by hypertonic jaw and upper cervical musculature.

πŸ”’ Restricted Opening / Catching

Feeling like your jaw cannot open fully or catches mid-movement due to tight pterygoid muscles and capsule restriction.

Understanding Your TMJ & Jaw Mechanics

The temporomandibular joint is one of the most frequently used joints in the human body, performing over 2,000 movements a day.

1. The Masticatory Muscles

The masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, and lateral pterygoid muscles exert immense force. When tight, they compress the joint disc and alter normal opening mechanics.

2. The Cervical Spine Connection

Your jaw position is intimately connected to your upper neck (C1–C3) and posture. Forward head posture places constant structural strain on the infrahyoid and jaw musculature.

3. Disc Tracking & Glide

Smooth jaw movement requires the fibrocartilaginous disc to glide forward seamlessly. Targeted extraoral manual therapy and cervical mobilization help restore balanced muscle tone for optimal disc tracking.

Why Comprehensive Clinical TMJ Therapy Works Better

Many people rely solely on night guards to protect teeth from wear. While dental guards protect tooth enamel, they do not resolve the muscular hypertonicity or cervical joint stiffness that drives the clenching force.

Daryl Stubbs RMT & CAT(C) combines gentle extraoral soft tissue work, suboccipital decompression, and postural exercises to treat both the jaw joint and its supporting cervical spine.

My experience at Sync Massage Therapy was outstanding! RMT Daryl was very careful to discuss my specific physical issues and medical conditions with me before we even began; he discussed various methods of treatment and their benefits with me before we even began, and made sure that my preferences and needs were incorporated into my treatment plan. I've been to many other RMT's who just treated me according to their standard routine, but Daryl made sure that our session was going to be centered around my specific health needs. He patiently answered all of my questions about various treatment styles, and didn't try to impose a plan on me. He checked in with me throughout the massage to make sure everything was comfortable and effective, and suggested other steps that we might incorporate into a long-term treatment plan. Daryl truly has my best interests at heart, and I'm glad that he is so knowledgable and intuitive in making a health-care plan for me!
