The Biomechanics of Pain

Understanding why your joint is hurting is the first step to fixing it.

The Knee is a "Dumb Joint"

The knee only does what the hip and ankle tell it to do. If your hip rotators are tight or your glutes are weak, they force your thigh bone to rotate internally. Your knee, caught in the middle, has to twist to compensate. This torsion causes wear, tear, and pain. We don't just treat the knee; we fix the hip and ankle mechanics causing the problem.

Daryl takes a holistic approach to treatment and takes the time to understand what is going on in the whole body. After treatment I felt lighter and had less tension in my hips and lower back. Would highly recommend!

My experience at Sync Massage Therapy was outstanding! RMT Daryl was very careful to discuss my specific physical issues and medical conditions with me before we even began; he discussed various methods of treatment and their benefits with me before we even began, and made sure that my preferences and needs were incorporated into my treatment plan. I've been to many other RMT's who just treated me according to their standard routine, but Daryl made sure that our session was going to be centered around my specific health needs. He patiently answered all of my questions about various treatment styles, and didn't try to impose a plan on me. He checked in with me throughout the massage to make sure everything was comfortable and effective, and suggested other steps that we might incorporate into a long-term treatment plan. Daryl truly has my best interests at heart, and I'm glad that he is so knowledgable and intuitive in making a health-care plan for me!

Common Questions

Why does my knee hurt if the problem is my hip?

The knee is caught in the middle. If your hip lacks mobility, your body forces the knee to twist to compensate, leading to pain and wear.

Do I need X-rays first?

Use your best judgment, but often we can identify the mechanical issues without imaging. If we suspect a fracture or serious pathology, we will refer you to a doctor immediately.

Will I have to stop running?

Not necessarily! Our goal is to get you back to your activities as soon as safely possible. We may modify your volume while we fix the mechanics.

Complementary At-Home Therapies

Because your lower body bears the brunt of your weight all day, the joints require profound rest and repair. Findings from research suggest regular sessions using red light therapy for knee pain may help manage intra-articular swelling. To further support the cartilage and supporting ligaments of your hips and knees, integrating PEMF mats for joint pain creates an optimal healing environment.
